Classes

Your first visit to Leroc Sussex

New to the group? You'll start in our Beginners' Class, learning the basics from scratch. Once that finishes, more experienced dancers move up to the Intermediate Class - but you're not left to freestyle alone: beginners get their own Consolidation Class running alongside it, giving you extra time to practise what you've just learned before the freestyle dancing starts.

We accept cash or card on the door, and parking is easy - there's free parking on site, plus more free parking in the surrounding roads.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to bring a partner?

No - most people come on their own. Modern Jive is taught with a rotating partner system, so you'll dance with lots of different people during the class and get to know the group quickly. If you do come with a partner, that's fine too.

Do I need any dance experience?

None at all. The beginners' class is exactly that - a class for complete beginners, taught step by step from scratch. Everyone in the room started exactly where you are now.

What if I've got two left feet?

Honestly, most people say that on their first night - and most of them keep coming back. Modern Jive is built around simple, repeatable moves rather than complicated footwork, so it's a lot more forgiving than people expect.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes you can move in. For footwear, flat shoes with a smooth (not too grippy) sole work best - trainers with thick rubber soles can make turns harder than they need to be.

Do I need to book, or can I drop in whenever suits me?

No booking, and no need to commit to a course - just turn up on the nights that work for you. Life gets busy, so come every week or dip in and out as it suits; you won't lose your place or feel like you've fallen behind.

Is there an age limit?

We welcome adults of any age - there's no upper limit, and you'll find a real mix of ages on the floor most weeks.

Will I feel awkward coming on my own?

It's actually one of the easiest ways to meet people, in a friendly, low-pressure setting - someone will say hello the moment you walk in. Plenty of our regulars started out solo, and quite a few of the friendships (and dance partners) on our floor started exactly the same way.

What happens when the intermediate class starts?

Beginners aren't left standing at the side - while the intermediate class runs, you'll have your own Consolidation Class alongside it, giving you extra time to practise what you've just learned before the freestyle dancing starts.

Can I take breaks or leave before the end?

Of course - it's a fun night out, not a fitness class. Grab a drink, have a chat, sit a song out, or head off early if you need to; come and go as suits you.

What music will I recognise?

More than you might expect - Modern Jive is danced to everything from chart pop and Motown to rock and roll and current dance tracks. If you can nod along to the radio, you'll recognise plenty on our dance floor.

Can I stay with my partner if we prefer?

Yes. Most people rotate partners during class - it's a great way to meet the group and pick things up faster - but if you'd rather learn as a pair, that's fine too.

Where do I park, and which door do I use?

There's free parking on site, plus more free parking in the surrounding roads. Enter the centre via the rear door in the car park - we're in the Shakespeare Hall (the main hall).
